The Dark is Rising Sequence

by Susan Cooper

Whenever I'm not sure what I fancy reading - I reach for this book. It's a collection of five books in one volume and yes I'll admit it's a children's book, but it never fails to capture my attention and even though I've read it a dozen times, I always read the whole thing again.

Magical, mysterious and thrilling, if you like Harry Potter, this knocks spots off him!

Agree wholeheartedly with all this! It's coming up to Christmas and it will soon be time for me to reread The Dark Is Rising again, as I tend to do every year! The winter landscapes Susan Cooper describes really come to life and it's all the more atmospheric when you can snuggle up on a cold night and immerse yourself in this magical world.

I'm so glad to see this series mentioned, and share your opinions on TDiR - the second books is my favorite book ever, and has been for the past twenty years! I've probably read it two hundred times, and have large sections of it, and the fifth book, memorised!

I'm hooked in much the same way, I've read this dozens of times and once started I have to read the whole thing! It is compulsive and although I enjoyed the Potter books I've never been able to reread them.
