Live chat help

Live chat requires Flash version 6 or later to work. If you cannot connect to the live chat server please check the following:

If you are using Flash version 6 it is possible that a firewall is blocking access to the chat server. The simplest way to solve this is to install the latest version of the Flash Player. You can do this by clicking here. Alternatively you can make sure that your firewall has access to port number 9191 though we would recommend simply upgrading to the latest Flash Player version.

If you continue to have difficulty viewing the chat room, contact us with details of where you're accessing the site from, eg, a public access terminal in a library, home PC, etc. Other helpful information would be what browser you are using (eg. Internet Explorer 6) and what version of the Flash Player you have installed (this is displayed below).

We are hoping to make this live chat facility available for use by any English library service wanting to set up sessions for their own readers. This could be used for online reading group sessions with housebound borrowers, readers who are geographically isolated or other targeted groups. It could also be used to set up twinned sessions with other reading groups in different parts of the country or, indeed, the world!

If you work for an English library service and would be interested in finding out more, please email: olive@openingthebook.com
